Basic ASCII generator
A downloadable tool for Linux
A small, simple image-to-ASCII converter built with Python and PySide6.
This is intentionally a simple tool rather than a full-featured editor. There are plenty of excellent online ASCII generators available, but I personally prefer having small utilities available locally, and perhaps you do too.
You'll probably want to check the Invert box for the vast majority of your images, that tends to work best.
I'll leave the .py available here, maybe in the future I'll make a windows .exe but it should work as is. Needs PySide6 and Pillow.
This will always be a free application.
More stuff was added but I'll leave an early basic version of the AppImage available for those who don't want all the bells and whistles. Code will always be the most recent version tho.
Changelog
1.1 - Added an Alpha Cutoff box, so images without background can work properly instead of generating a new one.
1.2 - Added an option to export as png. Default transparent background, with a toggle for a solid color black background. Added an option to change the resize filtering between Bicubic, Lanczos, Bilinear, and Nearest. (bicubic is default)
AI disclosure
I use GPT to learn python. So it debugged and wrote some bits.
